Collecting, What’s the point?
Something I’ve realised over time (and it’s taken a long time), is that while it’s fun to put collections of things together, it’s also such a waste that they are here – they should be with the community. I think this is particularly pertinent for football collections. These items are emotive, and they should be with the people who have lived and breathed the times that they have contributed to, not us.
With that in mind, our primary focus is sharing the collection rather than growing it. Ultimately. it’s what all of this should be about.
GARY SPEED WALK III – Elland Road, 13th June 2025
I was unbelievably fortunate to meet the heroes who took on the mammoth challenge of walking 120 miles from St. James’s Park, Newcastle, back to Elland Road, to raise money for the men’s suicide prevention charity, Andy’s Man Club. I can safely say I have never been in a room with a group of such emotionally warm and inspiring people.
I arranged with Michael from The Square Ball to have Gary Speed’s title winning away shirt at the finish line for the walkers to have time with, take photos and share stories. It was the most incredible experience to meet everyone, their families, their supporters, and one which I’ll never forget.
