1991/92 Gary Speed “Title Winning” Away Shirt

Manufacturer: Umbro

Sponsor: Evening Post

Season worn: 1991/1992

Competitions: Division 1, FA Cup, League Cup

Honours: Division 1 Champions

Player shirt features: Long sleeves, embroidered club badge, embroidered manufacturers logo, embossed sponsor, Football League sleeve patches, stitched numbers

One shirt for the season, and triangle matching: Back in the early 90s, shirts were readied for the whole season, rather than individual games. Gary Speed wore this exact shirt in every game we wore the yellow away kit. If you look at photos of these shirts, the triangles are always in different positions, so if you look at photos of Gary playing in yellow, you can match the triangles to the shirt above. The “up triangle” to the left of the club badge is a good example, or the “down triangle” below the badge just catching the edge of the Evening Post “g”.

Gary was one of Leeds’ favourite sons. He won the title with Leeds and was an integral part of one of Leeds’ strongest midfields playing along side David Batty, Gordan Strachan and Gary McAllister.

Tragically, Gary passed away on Sunday 27th November 2011. Football lost one of its greatest professionals and a true gentlemen.
